THREE CASE STUDIES IN GENEROSITY
Gando Primary School, SESC Pompéia, and the Spatial City
November 2022. Course work. Prof. Laura Miller.
These three case studies focus on a range of projects whose generosity is expressed in myriad ways. Gando Primary School, designed by Francis Kéré, is the result of community-led construction that directly contributed to the betterment of children's learning conditions in the village of Gando. Locals would go on to build additional school units as the need and possibility for better education is made more visible. SESC Pompéia designed by Lina Bo Bardi is a cultural center with broad programming, including sports, arts, theatre, and leisure. The project welcomes locals to participate in shared activity through "social equipment" such as the wandering stream and varied seating, as well as the roughness and piecemeal nature of the warehouses. Finally, the Spatial City was a lifelong project of Yona Friedman in which he imagined a new type of city: he believed that man should be able to affect his own environment as easily as he could move a chair, so it was crucial that his new city be constructed by average humans by trial and error.
