SIMMONS HALL STUDY

February 2022. Course work. Prof. David Verbeek. In collaboration with Amanda Nightingale.

Simmons Hall (Steven Holl, 2002) is a student residence at MIT campus sitting on a large open field, somewhat isolated from surrounding campus structures. It is an imposing bar building about 16 m wide and more than 100 m long. While the building is exceptional in many facets, the focus of the study is to gain an architectural understanding of its basic spatial logic (including the parti, the aggregation of units and facade windows, the interior design of units, circulation) as well as investigate two especially important features of Holl's design: solid-void interplay and natural lighting. My part of the project is as follows: All of Panel 1, with the exception of the collaged detail in the interior perspective views.
